Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyers Joins Efforts to Promote National Safety Month

Los Angeles (PRWEB) June 2, 2008 -- June 2008 has been declared National Safety Month by the National Safety Council. The Los Angeles Law Firm of Slaughter & Slaughter is proud to join the National Safety Month campaign and to help address the most "significant reasons for unintentional injuries and deaths in the American workplace, on the road and in the home and community." This year marks the 12th Anniversary of the National Safety Month campaign which has adopted the theme "Make A Difference."

According to the National Safety Council, Nine out of 10 accidental fatalities and two-thirds of disabling injuries to workers occur off the job. In 2005, more than 60 percent of all accidental deaths involved either workers who were off the job or their family members.

In 2006, there were over 120,000,000 unintentional injuries of which 26,200,000 were disabling. In that same year, for every 100,000 people, there were 40.1 unintentional deaths. 44,700,000 injures were a result of motor-vehicle accidents, which continues to be the number one cause of unintentional deaths in the United States.

"Our commitment to service goes beyond our clients alone. We are dedicated to promoting the safety and well being of our community," said Reza Torkzadeh, an attorney at Slaughter & Slaughter in Los Angeles and member of the National Safety Council. "There is nothing more devastating to a family than the unexpected and untimely death of a loved one. It is critical, that as a nation we recognize and address these issues and understand that most serious accidents resulting in death or disabling injuries are preventable," said Torkzadeh whose practice is dedicated to helping victims of serious injuries and wrongful death cases.

Each week during the month of June has been designated to a specific safety focus:

June 2 - 6:    Emergency Preparedness

June 9 - 13:    Distracted Driving

June 16 - 20: Poisoning Prevention

June 23 - 27: Falls Prevention

Emergency Preparedness: June 2 - 6

Having basic safety information and training can make the difference between life and death. Heart disease, including heart attack, is the leading cause of death in the United States. If CPR or AED is administered minutes after a heart attack, the chance of survival doubles.

Distracted Driving: June 9 - 13

Over 80 percent of auto accidents (http://www.injuryattorney-losangeles.com/car_accident-center.htm) involve some form of driver inattention, including cell phone usage, eating, playing with the radio or not watching the roads. The Law Firm of Slaughter & Slaughter encourages drivers to practice safety driving first while behind the wheel. Responsible driving includes paying proper attention and respecting others on the roads and using crosswalks. Cell phone use, sending text messages and using on-board computer navigation systems are the most common form distractions while driving.

Poisoning Prevention: June 16 - 20

People ages 45-64 account for the fastest growing accidental overdose death rate. The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs is contributing significantly to a dramatic rise in the number accidental deaths due to overdoses. When taking a prescription drug, know your risks.

Falls Prevention: June 23 - 27

Slip and Falls (http://www.injuryattorney-losangeles.com/slip_and_fall_attorney_los_angeles.htm) are more common than you think. Ranked third among the leading causes of accidental death in the United States, deaths from falls are a growing safety concern as the nation's population ages. Falls occur at the workplace just as frequently as they occur outside at home or in the public. Prevention of falls includes proper maintenance of work and public places, the use of handrails and proper footwear for the elderly. Falls are the leading cause of death for older Americans.

"We strongly urge our communities to come together in recognition of National Safety Month, and to promote the ideas and tips shared by the National Safety Council. As a proud member of the National Safety Council, we will continue to speak on safety issues and promote ideas on the prevention of deadly accidents," said Torkzadeh.
