Pathologist Dr. Roberto Garcia Joins Mount Sinai Medical Center's Specialty Sarcoma Team and Orthopedic Oncology Services

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 31, 2008 -- As one of only a few pathologists sub-specializing in orthopedic oncology and the diagnosis of rare types of bone and soft tissue tumors in the New York metropolitan area, Dr. Garcia will use his vast knowledge and expertise to diagnosis the most difficult and challenging cases brought to the Sarcoma Team and Orthopedic Oncology Services at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Garcia's experience and exposure working in orthopedic oncology, particularly with sarcomas and bone tumors, has pre-qualified him as an integral member of the Sarcoma Team.

"Dr. Garcia brings us his unique diagnostic skills, dedication, his passion for research and a commitment to education. It is the pathologist who analyzes the biopsy that provides the final diagnosis which dictates the treatment. Dr. Garcia's experience working with sarcomas and rare benign and malignant tumors affecting the musculoskeletal system, puts him in the forefront of orthopedic pathology" says James C. Wittig, M.D., Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief, Orthopedic Oncology (Adult and Pediatric) at Mount Sinai Medical Center, "I also believe his dedication to the field of pathology will not only be an asset to our patients, but to the multidisciplinary approach we are so proud to offer at the medical center."

Dr. Garcia received his Doctor of Medicine from Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was fascinated by the 'microscopic morphology of diseases' and aimed at becoming a surgical pathologist particularly because of the direct correlation pathology had with patient care. His interest was then peaked to study sarcomas of bone and soft tissues after being asked to consult on a case. After completing his residency in Combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology from the Harlem Hospital Center in New York City, he went on to complete his fellowship training in Orthopedic Pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases/Orthopedic Institute in New York, NY under the mentorship of Dr. German Steiner at HJD. After completing his fellowship, he joined the Department of Pathology at NYU/Bellevue Hospital. At NYU, he worked closely with Dr. Wittig, (at that time Dr Wittig was Director of the Sarcoma Service at NYU) and successfully diagnosed some of the most challenging cases. "After collaborating with Dr. Garcia during my 6 year stint at NYU on so many difficult and rare cases, I knew it was crucial that we recruit him to Mount Sinai to be part of our Sarcoma Team" says Dr. Wittig.

"It's an honor to join Mount Sinai Medical Center not only known for its high quality specialty patient care but its superb School of Medicine," notes Dr. Garcia, "I enthusiastically look forward to working with the professionals who make up the sarcoma team, sharing my knowledge at conferences and lectures and helping to continue the powerful training/educational forum for medical students, residents and fellows from all the related specialties."

Dr. Garcia speaks both English and Spanish and has contributed to many peer reviewed publications as well as been a guest speaker at meetings for the Pathologists' Bone Club of New York.

The sarcoma team at Mount Sinai Medical Center is a group of physicians, under the direction of Dr. Wittig, from different subspecialties that collaborate in the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors that affect children and adults. Each physician has expertise within their own field in the diagnosis and treatment of these tumors. These tumors are rare and often require collaboration between the orthopedic oncologist, musculoskeletal radiologist and pathologist for the proper diagnosis. Patients with these tumors usually require surgery and may also require chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, depending on the type of tumor. The Sarcoma Team at Mount Sinai Medical Center consists of the orthopedic oncologist, musculoskeletal radiologist, pathologist, medical oncologist, pediatric oncologist, radiation oncologist, pain management physicians, physician assistants, social workers, and therapists. The Sarcoma Team meets formally on a regular basis to discuss patients' treatment plans.
