The problems of Data Center Management

Data Center Management is a multi speciality discipline. The data center manager has to maintain the data, ensure that the operations of the data center run smoothly, know the business you are in and be good at people management and facility management. Data Center Management is 24/7 on all 365 days of the year.

Managing Data Centers is becoming complex as technology advances. The skills needed for Data Center Management are also becoming complex. A study estimates that the there will be a shortage of skilled and qualified data center managers by 2015. Presently, there are many job vacancies in Data Centers with companies taking at least half a year to find suitable people for their data centers. It can be seen that this industry is finding it difficult to find Data Center Professionals as the tasks associated with management of a Data Center are varied and demanding.

In a traditional set up, two separate functional departments provide services to the Data Center. The real estate, the building and its maintenance, space allocation for electrical equipment and offices are handled by the facilities division. The IT dept handles the installation of machines and other equipment, application software and lends support to the users. There are a set of people in between who manage the data center. Nobody is responsible or accountable in this kind of situation with compartmentalization of work. The data center managers find that they are accountable for problems associated with the two functional departments lending service to data center.

Colocation or outsourcing of data centers may be the best possible solution. The technology, space, power and other issues associated with a Data Center is better provided by the Colocation alternative. This leads to considerable savings in operational costs and solves availability of skilled persons for Data Center Management. The Data center industry is seeing a definite move towards these alternatives as a viable solution.
