According to the Associated Press, New Orleans saw 161 murders in 2006, raising the murder rate measured by FBI crime statistics officials to more than five times the national average. In Washington, D.C, police added newly trained law enforcement officers, instituted $8 million for overtime pay, and installed surveillance cameras to help fight crime.
